Organized? Jun 23

Many a day I walk into the kitchen and this is what I see...

The magnets lined up.  All except for the Winnie the Pooh one. And that little guy is by itself each time.  All placed there in that way by Savannah.  She has always had a specific place for things, even as a baby.  Organized at age 2?

Aaron told me the other day that he had been putting his t-shirts in 3 catergories in his drawer.  T-shirts he wears under other shirts. Another catergory for wear only around the house t-shirts.  And, of course, there is the graphic t-shirts pile.  Wow.  That to me is way organized.

Are you organized?  What does that really mean? I'd love to know your thoughts.

My former principle would stop me at least once a week and tell me how organized I was.  Wait just a minute before you think that I'm giving myself a compliment.  Being one of the most precious, dearest ladies I know, she is also one of the most disorganized persons I know. So, to her, that I made copies to give out to the students before class actually started versus remembering to do that in the middle of class was just pure organized.

Now, I will tell you that if you walk into my house on any given time of day, things are pretty neat.  I just work that way.  Not  neccessariy really clean, but pretty neat.  Does that make me organized?  Just don't look into my closets and drawers though   = ). While I may have Mexican Monday, it's not always on Monday and there is always a little Mexican mayhem that goes along with it in order to eat it...and that is just the way getting dinner on the table is for us.  And sure, I make lists.  But can I just let you know that I seem to rarely cross items off my list...like finishing sewing curtains that have been laying around since September or getting one final sewing project done for the girls (maybe it's a sewing thing).

So, go ahead. Let me know your thoughts about organization. Tips. Ways to be more so.  I'll take it all, though I can't promise to put it all into practice...

I am a very organized person and I guess that goes with being an accountant....although, now that I think about it, a CPA I used to work with was VERY messy...but she always knew where something was if she needed it. So, I don't know if you would call her unorganized or not. Everything has a place in my house...my poor child is already becoming like me because he always notices if there is something new in a room and he picks up any speck he sees on the floor and throws it away. I guess some ways to keep organized would be:
1. We pick up Waverley's toys every night before he goes to bed...and he helps
2. I organize pretty regularly throwing stuff out that I don't use or cleaning out closets when I have some free time.
3. I am a list maker...I have sticky notes all over my desk and on the counter at home.
4. I buy groceries every two weeks and I only buy groceries for the meals that I plan to cook during that time. I try to plan it around sales and coupons that I have as well to cut down on cost.
I don't know how all of this will work when I have a 2nd child but this is how I get things done these days.

Laurin, the principal is your PAL, girlfriend!

Ok, I am selectively organized. I love my lists and hate when the stuff doesn't all get checked off...though time limits for me are VERY broad. But I can make a mess, especially when I'm in a hurry and I just don't care. I clean it up later. I love to get certain things all orderly. But I have hard time maintaining the order. I just end up with a major ebb and flow situation. Things are in order....things creep out of order...things get all put back in order again. I don't have any tips though. I guess that would reveal that I'm really not that organized. I think the key is to have a place for everything though. Even if that thing gets out of place, if it doesn't have a place to begin with then I get stressed.

Well, I stay organized by making piles and constantly purging but I agree with Lee about the ebb and flow. The most interesting thing about this post is Savannah's magnet train - this says a lot about her to me! - very cute!

I used to think I was very organized... when my kids were smaller. Maybe I was. Maybe I just lived in more chaos then so it seemed like more of a feat to keep it simplified. I'm not sure I'm organized anymore. I enjoy thoughts and systems about organization and have read a great deal on the subject. But it seems the things most helpful have been observed in families that live life similar to me. I discouraged if I only read Simple Mom about keeping dirt at a minimum. She has two little girls still under age 7..... i think. Nothing against moms of two little girls (wink). Its just that I have found it very helpful to observe moms in my same category. The best tip I've ever heard and still live by on a regular basis is...... do a little everyday. We don't have a house cleaning day here. That would never ever work for our family. So...... its all about what will work at your house.

I'm organized to a fault, and I really mean it when I say "fault"! Your husband's shirt drawer makes all kinds of sense to me. Confession: I actually rotate my husband's tshirts (the white undershirts he wears every day) and his underwear, or else he'd wear the same ones every day (after I wash them and put them back in his drawer, of course!). Our desk drawers are a mess right now and it's driving me crazy. My problem is that the organizing and cleaning are never done!

But listen, you have two girls. Don't be hard on yourself (I don't know if you are or not; just sayin'). I seriously do worry about when I have children. My OCD is going to have to tone down a bit; that's all there is to it. That or my children will have a horrible childhood because mommy will spend her days following them around with a clorox wipe....
